UNS’ letter to the delegates of the EFJ’s Annual Meeting in Pristina about the problems of journalists in Kosovo and the reasons for non-participating

The Journalists Association of Serbia (UNS) wrote to the participants before the Annual Meeting of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), which was held in Pristina on May 23 and 24, about the problems of journalists in Kosovo and Metohija, and stated that it refused to participate in this AM because it was, despite the EFJ president's promise, expelled from its organization.

As a participant in the 2024 Annual Meeting of the European Federation of Journalists in Pristina, please take the following into consideration:

The journalists of Jedinstvo, the sole newspaper in the Serbian language in Kosovo and Metohija, have to leave their premises in North Kosovska Mitrovica they have been using for more than 20 years. Their space has allegedly been sold, although they have received no official document. The Coordinating Center for Kosovo and Metohija gave the space to Jedinstvo to use back in 2003. Before that, in 1999, the Jedinstvo staff was moved out of its premises in Priština, which have not been returned to the newspaper to date.

Radio Television of Serbia journalist Svetlana Vukmirović has been prevented from doing her job several times, by being banned from entering Kosovo and Metohija. Tanjug News Agency journalist Anđelko Utješanović has faced the same kind of ban. The authorities in Priština ban journalists from entering Kosovo without any explanation. 

Even 20 years after the March Pogrom in Kosovo and Metohija, we are witnessing scandalous reports by Radio Television of Kosovo’s (RTK) website, which continues to forge facts and inaccurately inform the public about this event. 

On March 17, 2024, RTK repeated on its website the fake news from 20 years ago, that three Albanian boys drowned in the Ibar River “while running from a group of Serb youths.” The fake news served as a trigger for the violence that broke out and which left 19 people dead, 39 churches and monasteries destroyed, villages and urban environments burned, more than 900 Serbs beaten up and harassed, and some 4,000 Serbs expelled.  

The Press Council of Kosovo has dismissed as unfounded a recent complaint by UNS’ Kosovo branch against repeated unethical reporting that RTK resorts to.

Organizers of news conferences and meetings between officials have this year, like in previous years, denied citizens and media outlets in Kosovo and Metohija translation into Serbian, an official language in Kosovo and Metohija.

The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) and its Kosovo branch are not taking part in the EFJ Annual Meeting due to having been excluded from preparations for and organization of the Annual Meeting in Priština.

Unlike the Kosovo Journalists Association (AGK), which is the EFJ’s partner in organizing the Annual Meeting in Priština, UNS in Kosovo was ignored, despite promises to the contrary from EFJ President Maja Sever. 

UNS in Kosovo, like the Kosovo Journalists Association, was registered in this territory in 2002, and has existed in Priština since 1950.

Молимо Вас да као учесник Скупштине Европске федерације новинара (ЕФЈ) 2024. године у Приштини, узмете у обзир следеће:

• Новинари „Јединства“, јединог листа на српском језику на Косову и Метохији, морају да напусте редакцијске просторије у северном делу Косовске Митровице које користе више од 20 година. Наводно, њихов простор је продат, иако нису добили званични документ. Простор је „Јединство“ добило на коришћење од Координационог центра за Косово и Метохију 2003. године. Пре тога, 1999. године редакција листа „Јединство“ исељена је из својих просторија у Приштини, које им до данас нису враћене.
  
  
• Новинарки Радио-телевизије Србије Светлани Вукмировић неколико пута је онемогућаван рад забраном уласка на Косово и Метохију. Са истим начином забране суочио се и новинар новинске агенције Танјуг Анђелко Утјешановић. Приштинске власти новинарима забрањују улазак на Косово без образложења.
  
  
• И после 20 година од Мартовског погрома на КиМ, сведоци смо скандалозног извештавања сајта Радио-телевизије Косова (РТК) који и даље кривотвори чињенице и нетачно обавештава јавност о овом догађају.
  
  РТК је 17. марта 2024. године поновио на свом сајту лажну вест од пре 20 година да су се тројица албанских дечака утопила у реци Ибар „док су бежали од групе српских младића“. Та лажна вест је била окидач за избијање насиља у ком је убијено 19 људи, уништено 39 цркава и манастира, попаљена села и урбане средине, претучено и малтретирано више од 900, а протерано око 4.000 Срба. 

Савет за штампу Косова одбацио је као неосновану недавну жалбу УНС-а на Косову на понављање неетичког извештавања којем прибегава РТК.

• Организатори конференција за новинаре и састанака званичника и ове, као и ранијих година, грађанима и медијима на КиМ ускраћивали су превод на српски језик, званични језик на Косову и Метохији.

УНС са својим огранком на Косову не учествује на Годишњој скупштини ЕФЈ-а због искључивања из припреме и организовања Годишње скупштине у Приштини.

УНС на Косову је, за разлику од Асоцијације новинара Косова (АГК), која је партнер ЕФЈ-а у организацији Годишње скупштине у Приштини, игнорисан, упркос обећању председнице ЕФЈ-а Маје Север да неће бити тако.

УНС на Косову је, као и Асоцијације новинара Косова, на овој територији регистрован 2002. године, а у Приштини постоји од 1950. године.
